Roger Molina’s journey in the world of hairdressing unfolds like a meticulously crafted masterpiece, reflecting a deep-seated belief in the transformative power of a well-conceived look. With a career spanning over two decades, his approach to hairdressing transcends mere aesthetics, delving into the essence of personal transformation and the profound impact it has on self-perception. His philosophy, likening a salon to a vibrant garden where each client is a unique rose bush poised for blossoming, encapsulates his holistic approach to styling. This poetic vision, combined with his rich experience across esteemed venues and collaborations with industry giants like Redken and Sam Villa, sets the stage for his nomination in the Hairbrained Awards. As the awards ceremony approaches, Roger's narrative stands as a beacon for aspiring hairdressers, illustrating the boundless possibilities inherent in the craft of hairdressing.

Could you guide us through the journey of bringing your Hairbrained Awards video to life, from initial concept to final cut?

The stop motion videos I've come to make and love are animated. movement is the key. It has to have a unique design, shape or action as it builds.

Ie The 'Balayage reel' had a beautiful dance and flow, 'razor bob' was about the sort cartoon effects of how it was filmed. Very choppy exaggerated movements made it cartoony.

So the journey for all 4 nominated reels was different. Yet each has their own thing that stands out and I tried to cultivate it's individuality no matter what nuance it bore.

Could you share a memorable anecdote or behind-the-scenes story from the production of your nominated work that encapsulates the spirit of creativity and collaboration?

My best videos are from dreams I've had or like downloads that I get. In prayer or meditation. I highly recommend sound baths for this too.

When I get a good vision, I'll see what's its like when it's shaped into sculptures. I see it in my head all of a sudden. And I know the name.most of the time. But the shape for sure.

'Beowulf dry cut' is an example.

Literally, Beowulf the dragon slayer.it came into my head. BEOWULF! I told @ellendevinehair my partner, I have to make this video tomorrow. And it will be called Beowulf! Felt like I was naming a child.  It got nominated and the OG reel was almost 3 million views. So cool.

What do you think sets apart exceptional hairstyling or artistic expression in today's competitive landscape?

I think a unique angle and or style is critical. But at the root of it all is truth. A special fact or idea that will promote the good or love for a thing. Regardless the niche. When content really hits it is obvious to everyone. It sort of reveals a bottom truth or reads As something real.  Something helpful, something truthfully funny.

Considering the evolving trends and preferences in the hair industry, how do you stay informed and inspired to continually innovate and adapt your craft?

Education is always king when it comes to evolving as a hairdresser. Your greatest growth will always be connecting to teachers.  Side by side, let them watch you cut.  Take Hands on training. Find every opportunity. But if that's not available, get a mannequin, watch videos and cut along, whatever it takes to learn. Learn new things all the time, your whole life. Challenge yourself with a mannequin as often as you can bear! 🐻

What message or advice would you like to share with your peers in the hairdressing community, especially those aspiring to be nominated for future Hairbrained Awards?

YOU GOTTA PLAY TO WIN!

Put your chips on the table. One year ago I was an 'anti-award' hairdresser. And I was against social media to be honest. But I decided to lean into the flow instead of standing against it. i had Look for ways to create in which I could believe! So it felt real.

The secret?  seek ideas and inspiration formed at the source, inside. You have it in you. That thing that is meant for you. And as much as your are seeking it, Is waiting for you to find it. But you won't find it until you start. It reveals itself to the one trying to find it.

Make the video, watch it, change it, evolve it, 'edit it's until it is you. little by little, Project by project you'll see through the glass and find the thing that you've been seeking. You!

Start there.

Nominations will follow.

Good luck!
