Tell us about how your entry developed.

Summer of 2011, my mentor and dear friend, Helen Oppenheim recommended I do a Great Gatsby themed shoot. The movie was just going into production due out in theatres in February 2012. I was thrilled to get an amazing 10 page spread in KURV magazine which is a huge, gorgeous, high-fashion magazine!

I held tightly to the collection and did not post it on any social media or send to any editors in order to submit it for a NAHA Editorial entry. It was actually great timing because the movie was delayed and right at the time I received the NAHA Nomination, the film debuted in theaters!

Mentorship is vital to success.. who has mentored you over the years?

I have made it a point to continually learn from those around me. I have been so fortunate to have had a series of strong women to help guide my path. My very first boss was fantastic and from the very beginning encouraged me to travel and grow in the industry.

Then, I had the good fortune to train directly under Louise Rusk to learn amazing cutting skills. A few years back Brooke Carlson encouraged me to increase notoriety in the industry and was in fact, the first person to encourage me to become a “name in the industry.” She encouraged me to enter NAHA, do TV work, and join Intercoiffure. Now, as a member of the Intercoiffure Artistic Team, I get to work with amazing ladies like Vivienne MacKinder, Mary Brunetti and Faatemah Ampey.

Jeryl Spear has been both cheerleader and advisor since the very beginning of my career as an editorial stylist. What a thrill and honor to be named a “Living Legend” by HOT Magazine.

What is thrilling to me is the positive ripple effect of hard work:  As I grow in the industry, I have become a mentor  inspiring others to learn, grow, and succeed!

If a stylist could only take one class this year, which one would you suggest ?

The MODERN SALON Artist Session changed the direction of my career. Led by Maggie Mulhern, this 2 day training culminates in a photo shoot with fantastic Roberto Ligresti and marvelous makeup artist, David Maderich.

Hair runs in your family.. what is it like working with your daughter?

Oh my goodness. Every day is an absolute pleasure working with my daughter,  Amy Lauren!  We work in tandem on all the clients. My sister, Karen also works in the salon with us. I run a tight ship. We have so much fun but keep super busy. We try to provide great customer service with our motto, “be nice and do pretty hair.”

What has been the most amazing opportunity you have had in this industry so far?

I have been fortunate to have had so many amazing experiences that I find it difficult to name the most “amazing”. Would it be traveling to 5 continents, working New York Fashion Week, having my work published in hundreds of magazines, producing successful advertising campaigns, becoming a NAHA Finalist…or simply making a woman feel and look more beautiful than she ever has in her life? What a rewarding career! I work my ass off and love every minute of it!

Have you ever had an “OMG, what the hell am I doing here?!” moment? Share.

One of the most difficult moments I can remember was holding an international cutting and coloring training in Europe that was being translated simultaneously into 5 languages. Sometimes travel to other countries although exciting and new, can feel isolating with language barriers, time differences, and extreme work loads.

Words to live by…

“The harder I work, the more luck I seem to have.”

On a perfect day I spend it…..

Doing hair and makeup for a photo shoot!

What do people find most surprising about you?

I almost had a reality show set in my hair salon!

What is your next BIG goal?

Currently working on my new company, “Elegant, Organized Beauty™”… with my custom makeup bag, brushes, compacts, and cosmetics all available at my website, sherrijessee.com430277_10200785285012071_293411733_n

***Nerd Alert***  I (Erin) was recently gifted one of these incredible compacts and was unreasonably excited about this product.  They are so unique and handy.  I seriously have my entire face of makeup in one spot.  #LoveIt

I knew I was a Hair Nerd when….

I began cutting hair and doing makeup at age 11.
