Allison Moncheck
What originally drew you to the hair industry, and when did you realize it was your passion?
I first realized wanted to go into hair after seeing a cosmetology career program that came to my school when I was a freshmen in high school. I felt it would be a good job to have during college or as a backup plan. My parents really pushed me to go to college so hair was never my priority. But once I was in school, and by the end of senior year, I was thriving and really had found something I loved and came easy to me. I continued to do hair while getting my masters degree in education and working for a few years. I eventually felt I wanted to quit my full time job and own a salon, so in 2021 Unorthodox came to fruition.
How would you describe your artistic style in three words, and why?
Unorthodox (of course), effortless, elevated. My style is Unorthodox, Effortless, Elevated because I break the rules with creativity, craft seamless, low-maintenance color, and deliver rich, modern brunettes that feel luxurious yet natural.
Who or what has had the biggest influence on your creative journey as a hair artist?
My biggest influence on my creative journey as a hair artist would have to be all of the hard things I've experienced in life. I've truly learned that everything is a stepping stone and leads you to where you're meant to be. I've lost a lot in my life and have experienced on an array of trials. But everything I've been through has built a resilience and ambition that makes me feel unstoppable.
Is there a particular moment in your career when you felt like you'd truly found your artistic voice?
I feel that once I started to lean into education, that's when I truly found my artistic voice. It was a way for me to merge both of my passions into one. I love volunteering my time going to hair schools and teaching anyone willing to listen. I love the intimate connections I experience with independent education, and now I got to experience being on stage and sharing my knowledge with hundreds of stylists at a time.
What's a project or creation you've worked on that you're particularly proud of, and what made it special?
Honestly it would just have to be my salon. I've created such an amazing space housing incredibly talented hairstylists. It's been a journey to build the team I have but I'm really proud of my ups and downs and lessons that I've experienced as a salon owner. It's all worked out for the better.
What role do you think competitions like the Hairbrained Awards play in elevating the craft of hair artistry?
I think competitions are always a great way to push yourself to be better as an artist. Plus the shows and getting together with everyone is so much fun!
Wanna catch up with Allison IRL?
I have quite a few shows I'm educating at and also some independent classes I'll be teaching and hopping all over the US for! I'm very excited!
