Hayden Cassidy - Mizutani World Cut Jam

Drawing from a kaleidoscope of global experiences, Leah Hayden Cassidy—known on social platforms as Hayden Cassidy—represents the pinnacle of men's hairstyling. Irish by birth yet London-based, Hayden has become an international sensation, renowned for her unique blend of barbering techniques influenced by the diverse cultures and styles she's encountered across Europe, Asia, and America. As we anticipate the vibrant Mizutani Scissors Anniversary Event: World Cut Jam Art of Cutting Hair 2023, it's my pleasure to spotlight Hayden as one of the remarkable talents joining them in Tokyo.

From her early days in Ireland, where she honed her skills amidst a burgeoning industry, to collaborating with high-profile magazines and creatives, Hayden has established a universally esteemed clean aesthetic that resonates with an international audience. Not only a stylist but also a revered educator, she is dedicated to elevating the craft through her educational platforms, empowering barbers worldwide. Join us on November 6, where Hayden Cassidy will take center stage, sharing her expertise and perhaps, more importantly, her vision that continues to shape the future of barbering.

In the ever-evolving world of hairdressing and beauty, how do you see Mizutani's World Haircut Jam contributing to the growth and innovation of the industry?

I think the World Cutting jam is an amazing industry event. It’s so special and important to bring together industry educators and artists from around the world. I love that we are very different but share the same passion for quality that Mizutani represents. I remember starting off in the industry 8 years ago and hearing about events like the world cutting jam, it’s a dream to be here now and definitely a career highlight.

Do you remember the moment you realized that educating others was so important to you and what did those first steps look like?

I think I’ve always believed in the importance of educating in general, and I remember realising I could communicate in a way that guided people or allowed them to understand easier. I grew up with a lot of teachers in my family, so I guess it was in my genes. I started educating and coaching football and dance as a teenager so when I started in the industry and as I started to progress I felt it was important to help guide others in a way that was simplistic and fun! Education for me was always just about helping others to grow and build their confidence.

Coming together with artists from around the globe creates an incredible community. What or Who are you looking forward to the most on this specific trip to Tokyo, Japan?

Im just so excited to be here! It’s been a bucket list destination and event for my whole career. For it to finally come through is a dream. I’ve been lucky enough to educate at events around the world with most of the artists who will be at the event, so to be reunited on a stage in Tokyo will be an incredible moment.

What are your top 3 favorite Mizutani shears?

Cosine mini, tschume and Acro!

What was the best piece of advice you were given early in your career?

Don’t be afraid to make a mistake, mistakes allow us to recognise a problem, fix it and grow. I think the biggest thing for a lot of people is fear, but once you get over that fear by focusing on the positives it allows you to reach your full potential. That was something I realised early on and I feel with that advice I really realised I had the control of my journey.

Favorite memory of your career so far...

That is such a hard question,  there has been so many! I would say travelling. One of my favourite things about my job is the destinations it’s taken me. I’ve been introduced to so many beautiful cultures around the world - I can’t wait to add Japan to that list at the world cutting jam.

If you weren’t doing hair or in the professional beauty industry, what would you be doing?

I would definitely say something practical and artistic, but it would also have to be something that involved working with people. Hair really is the perfect passion for me, but if I wasn’t doing this I think I’d like to try my hand at being a chef or carpenter! I’ve always been curious about so many things, I really would try my hand at anything

I knew I was a Hair Nerd when…

I couldn’t stop noticing hairstyles

Where can people find Hayden?

London, travelling to the next hair event somewhere, or every year at Glastonbury festival in the UK! It’s my other favourite place in the world!
