How To: Cut Full Face Framing Layers

“This client comes in one to two times a year and her haircuts are always a transformation, which makes it so much fun. This time, her goal was volume, long face framing layers, plus a full side sweeping fringe,” explains Jamie McDaniel, Sam Villa Ambassador @jamiemcdhair.

How to Cut and Style Full Face Framing Layers

  1. Starting in the fringe area, part hair on either side and divide left from right. With zero elevation over direct each side to the other side and cut to length with Sam Villa Signature Series Reversible Blending Shears to diffuse the cutting line for added softness and texture.

  2. Moving to the face framing and layers, start in the front. Find the preferred starting length for framing by moving the hair around the cheek so it is laying in its styling position; point cut the guide with Same Villa Artist Series Shear 5:25”. Taking the guide and the first vertical subsection, over direct to center front and elevate the hair above the vertical line of 90° (also known as 180°); cut to the guide. That will be the stationary guide for everything from the ear forward. Repeat on the other side.

  3. Divide the back of the head at center back. Grab a small vertical section from the back of the front section as a guide. Working with either the left or the right back sections, over direct and elevate the first subsection to the stationary guide above to ear and cut the hair to the guide. Copy and paste throughout the rest of the section. Repeat on the over side.

  4. Cut the perimeter.

  5. Apply a full body mousse and start rough drying with a Sam Villa Artist Series Professional Blow Dryer

  6. Take a horizontal section and wrap around a Sam Villa Signature Series Thermal Round Brush 1.5”. Work hair around the brush until all of the moisture is out and hit with a cold shot. Unravel and finish cooling down around a Velcro roller. Complete whole head except for the fringe.

  7. For the fringe, blow dry with zero elevation from side to side. Bevel off ends with the 1.5” thermal brush.

  8. Apply lightweight hairspray and take out Velcro rollers.

  9. Brush out with a paddle brush.  See full look here.

“The beautiful thing about this cut is it has longevity, which works well for someone who doesn’t want to visit a salon on a regular basis,” adds McDaniel.
