John McCormick - Hairbrained Awards

There's an event on the horizon that promises to dazzle and inspire - Hairbrained Awards. A celebration of skill, creativity and a little humor is just around the corner on March 3, 2024 in New York City, and we're thrilled to share the excitement with you. As we count down the days to this prestigious occasion, we turn our attention to a remarkable figure in the professional beauty industry: John McCormick.

John McCormick is one of our favorite names in this industry and an OG Hair Nerd Bestie to The Hair Nerds and Hairbrained. With a list of awards, nominations, tv/movie credits and skills taller than he is, John has built himself a career many are green-eyed of when they hear about. As a past nominee of the Hairbrained Awards, we wanted to shine the spotlight on John and all of his amazing achievements in this profession, including his much deserved Daytime Emmy Award.

John brings humor and enthusiasm to the community in a way that is infectious and make you crave more time with him. He brought new life to the idea of mannequin heads as something more than just a took for practicing the craft. So whether we are crashing on his couch before an event in LA or hanging at education together, we always treasure our time with John McCormick. Get to know him!

Could you share a memorable moment or highlight from your journey with the Hairbrained Awards that has stayed with you over the years?

The level of effort that is put in to those evenings. Everyone feels special and everyone just had a blast.   Win or lose, everyone felt honored. Oh, and finally getting to hug Lupe Voss!

In your opinion, what are the key qualities that set a Hairbrained Awards submission apart and make it stand out to the judging panel?

Passion, it shows thru. Not necessarily the production, but the heart behind those videos. Make them for yourself, not to get a trophy.

What role do you see Hairbrained and similar platforms playing in the future of the beauty and hairstyling industry?

As our industry continues the fight to stay licensed, events like Hairbrained will help guide the public to true craftspeople in their areas.

How do you balance your creative pursuits and professional growth with the demands of the industry and your personal life?

It can be a lot. Uniquely, I work in film and tv exclusively, so our hours are inhumane. But your crew quickly becomes family. Creativity is a daily exercise on set because we must adapt to a script on a moment's notice sometimes!

What are your thoughts on the impact of social media and digital platforms in shaping the careers of today's hairdressers and artists?

I would not have a career without social media. It opened many opportunities for me. But I also leaned heavily into the "social" part. It's kinda how I'm built. I'm peoplely lol. It has been my pleasure to get to know every person I reached out to and those that sought me out.

Where can people find more about you?

@thejohnmccormick on insta...but it's the journey of my life, not just my art. Be warned, there will be a gogo boy or two 😉
