“What's Next for Fringe?” With Sam Villa
Every stylist knows that adding fringe to a style not only detracts, camouflages or exposes facial features, it awakens a shape and makes if far more interesting. Sam Villa, Co-Founder and Chief Creative Officer of Sam Villa® and Global Artistic Ambassador for Redken, says that this season fringe will take a turn from middle parts falling vertically to side sweeping fringe styled with more height – see here. Villa calls them "side saddle fringes" with a pop.
"Parts have been centered for a while, so the natural progression is for them to move to the side and infused with more volume to pop up a bit," he explains.
Wondering if a guest can handle bangs? Ask them if they can handle the maintenance. "Whether we're talking side swept, horizontal or short blunt fringe, at some point bangs will need to be refreshed...and some people might have to do it on a daily basis," adds Villa.
Maintenance: Spritz with water and apply a product such as Redken Quick Blow Out. Comb through hair with the fine teeth of a comb for tension, pushing the spine of the comb down for extra weight, and blow dry in an pattern "X" pattern to redirect hair. This technique allows fringe to be styled to either lay flat, sweep to the side, and at the very least, not stick straight up.
Tips for Cutting Fringe
Faces are divided into thirds - forehead to bridge of nose, bridge of nose to end of nose and tip of nose to chin. Design fringe using horizontal, vertical or diagonal lines to either highlight, minimize or camouflage facial features.
Always cut fringe dry to better read the length and where the hair will fall.
For fringe to move to the side, it needs length and interior support. Once cut, use a Sam Villa Signature Series Razor to soften. Take a diagonal forward section, comb to smooth, and diagonally weave razor (like a highlight) with blade turn down to softly remove weight.
To create a sense of looseness, use a larger comb when holding sections for less tension.
When teaching a guest how to style their fringe, allow them to film the process in the salon so they have a styling tutorial to refer to at home.
Styling Side Saddle Fringe with Pop: Apply Redken One United for moisture and then emulsify a small amount of Big Blowout in hands and rake through hair. Using a Sam Villa Thermal Ionic Pro Vent Brush, hold brush vertically with hair in it while directing air and hot heat at the section. This brush allows more air and heat to pass through the vent delivering extra hold to create height. Now, spray section with Redken Control Hairspray for more control, and apply more heat to lock in the style. Let cool and remove brush for an elevated side saddle fringe.
